10 Things to Know About Fertilization

 

Most people have wrong ideas about fertilization and pregnancy. This is probably because they don't understand how and where fertilization takes place or what transpires in the development of an embryo. Fertilization might sound like a complex process, but understanding the process will help you understand your own reproductive system and make decisions. 1. The process of fertilization process takes place in the fallopian tubes

There are a lot of people that believe fertilization occurs in the uterus or ovaries. However, this is far from true. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes, which connect the ovaries to the uterus. The fertilization process occurs when a sperm cell meets an egg cell in the fallopian tube successfully. After the process of fertilization, the newly fertilized cell is known as a zygote. After then, the zygote moves down to the fallopian tube then into the uterus. 

However, in a case whereby the fallopian tube is missing or probably blocked, it's possible to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this case, fertilization takes place outside your body.

2. The process of fertilization doesn't often take place, even if you ovulate

In this process, you're likely to become pregnant with twins known as fraternal twins, also called nonidentical twins. As a result of fertilization from two separate egg cells and two separate sperm cells, it's likely the twins don't have the same DNA and might not look identical. 

4. Identical twins pregnancy takes place when fertilized eggs divide

In some cases, a single embryo divides after fertilization, resulting in identical twins because both cells come from the precise same egg and sperm cell. Identical twins always have the same DNA and a closely similar look. 

5. Every fertilized egg implants in the uterus

At this very point of ovulation, the uterus wall becomes thickened. Aside from any complications, fertilized egg goes on to implant in the uterus by sticking to the thickened uterus wall. Research says that someone can be considered pregnant only when the embryo is successfully implanted against the uterine wall. However, embryos can be prevented from implanting through emergency contraception, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and infertility. 

6.  Urgent need of contraception and IUDs are not forms of abortion

All these prevent ovulation, but in a case where ovulation has transpired already, you then take them as a plan B. Studies state that it may only prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. The IUD thickens cervical mucus in some cases. Therefore, preventing ovulation and creating a medium that kills and weakens sperm, thus preventing fertilization chances. IUDs and emergency contraceptive pills don't end a pregnancy; instead, they prevent pregnancy from happening. 

7. Ectopic pregnancy is possible when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus

In a case whereby a fertilized egg burrows outside the uterus or uterine line, this is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Most ectopic pregnancies take place when the embryo implants in one of the fallopian tubes. This particular type of pregnancy is seen as a medical emergency that requires a swift response to prevent tube rupture. 

8. When you go for a pregnancy test, it discovers hCG in one's urine or blood

After the process of implantation, the placenta forms next. At this point of pregnancy, your body produces the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). According to research, hCG levels double every two to three days in the early period of pregnancy.
