Although there is yet no known way to prevent/cure Type 1 diabetes (except in some very specific situations), Research has shown that significant weight loss can prevent, delay or even reverse Type 2 Diabetes which takes up a majority of diabetes cases (up to 80%).

HERE ARE SOME OF THE PROVEN WAYS TO PREVENT DIABETES
Like I stated earlier, there is no cure or particular prevention for Diabetes however the below tips have been studied to have a positive impact on diabetic patients.

ENGAGE IN MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Since diabetes is caused by excessive glucose (sugar) in the blood circulation and Glucose is required/ burned for physical activities it should be no surprise that an increase in the level of physical activity would have a corresponding effect on the level of Glucose (sugar) present in the blood. Higher levels of physical activity (more than 90 minutes per day) reduce the risk of diabetes by 28%.

EAT HEALTHY: An increase in the consumption of diet rich in whole grains and fiber, and good fats, such as the polyunsaturated fat (the kind found in nuts, vegetable oils, and fish). Limiting sugary beverages and eating less red meat and other sources of saturated fat can also help prevent diabetes.

STOP SMOKING:
Strangely as it may sound, Smoking tobacco has been associated with an Increase in the risk of diabetes and its complications, so I would advise you stay safe and quit smoking if you have been diagnosed as diabetic or abstain totally from smoking if you do not smoke yet.

TAKE MEDICATION: In some cases where the all the above does not work properly there are various anti-diabetic drugs available either to be taken orally or to be taken by injection, either way. This has proven to be a very effective way to control the level of sugar present in the blood circulation.
