DIABETES – MEANING, SYMPTOMS AND TYPES




Diabetes mellitus (DM) commonly referred to simply as Diabetes by Most people has been a major health issue affecting majority Of the population for a long time now with an estimated 415 million of the world population having diabetes as of 2015 and up to 90 % of this cases being Type 2 diabetes.
Did you also know that more than half of all people who are diabetic don't even know they have diabetes? In this article we would be discussing the meaning, Symptoms and types in simple uncomplicated terms. Let’s get into it Shall we?


WHAT IS DIABETES?
According to Wikipedia Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. In simple terms Diabetes is simply a case in which an Individual has an abnormally high level of glucose (sugar) Circulating in the blood mainly due to lack of insulin (Insulin itself is a hormone produced by the pancreas, which regulates the Blood sugar lever between certain limits)
Normally, a typical human body should produce enough insulin to Blood sugar levels at an Ideal rate and also regulate the amount of Glucose produced by the liver.


SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES
  • Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include;
  • Frequent Urination
  • Frequent Thirst
  • Hunger – Even though you are eating
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Cuts/bruises take longer time to heal
  • Weight loss – Even when you eat just fine (Type 1)
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (Type 2)

TYPES OF DIABETES
There are two types of diabetes which are;


TYPE 1 DIABETES:
This is caused by the persons own immune system destroying the cells in the pancreas that makes the insulin. The loss of insulin producing cells in the pancreas thereby leading to an insulin deficiency, although type 1 diabetes can affect all ages it is most common in children and young people under the age of 30, Type 1 diabetes is partly inherited, with multiple genes and can be triggered by one or more environmental factors. The persons own immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that makes the insulin.


TYPE 2 DIABETES:
This is caused by the defective responsiveness of body tissues to insulin, It is characterized by insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes is mostly due to Lifestyle and Genetics, Dietary, lack of physical activity, consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks have been studied to Influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is mostly common in older people.
